America runs on nurses

Nurses are the largest health care profession in the country — the first face people see on the worst day of their lives. You take care of America. Let's make sure someone's taking care of you.

The problem

The coverage you have belongs to your hospital

Most nurses get life insurance through work. It's usually one or two times your salary, and it's tied to the job — not to you.

  • It ends when the job does

Group life usually stops the day you leave. And nurses move — a new unit, a new hospital, a travel contract, back to school for your NP. Every move can leave a gap.

  • It isn't enough for your family

One or two times your salary rarely pays off a mortgage, let alone replaces your income for the years your family would need it.

  • The work takes a toll

Twelve-hour shifts, heavy lifting, constant exposure. If an illness takes you off the floor, living benefit riders can pay out part of the death benefit while you're alive.

Why nurses own their coverage

Keep your hospital plan. Keep your 403(b). This works right alongside them.

  • 01

    Yours, not your hospital's

Work coverage usually ends the day you turn in your badge. A policy you own stays with you through every unit, contract and career move.

  • 02

    Flexes with your schedule

Put more in when you're picking up overtime or a contract bonus, and dial it back if you go part-time or head back to school, within your policy's limits.

  • 03

    Protection when the market drops

Your cash value has a 0% floor, so a bad year in the market credits zero instead of a loss. Policy fees still apply — and we'll show you the down years, not just the good ones.

  • 04

    Living benefits

A heart attack, a stroke or a diagnosis that takes you off the floor. If you're diagnosed with a qualifying critical, chronic or terminal illness, you can get part of your death benefit early — while you're still alive.

“I'd been quoted three times and every agent pushed the same product. Prime was the first to actually show me the numbers side by side — including the option that paid them less. That's why I signed.”

Changing jobs

Your coverage moves with you

A new unit this spring. A 13-week contract in Arizona this summer. Back to school for your NP after that. Your policy goes wherever you go — no hospital or agency decides what your family gets, and depending on your age and health, many nurses qualify with no medical exam.

Straight answers

Nurse IUL, answered plainly

What is an IUL for nurses?

An IUL is permanent life insurance that provides a death benefit for your family while also giving you the opportunity to build cash value over time. For nurses it's designed around two things work coverage doesn't do: it belongs to you rather than the hospital, and the premium can flex with overtime and contract pay.

My hospital already gives me life insurance. Why would I need this?

Employer group life is often a multiple of one or two times salary, and it generally ends when you leave that employer. Nurses move — new unit, new hospital, a travel contract, back to school — and each move can leave a gap. A personally owned policy sits on top of the work coverage and doesn't change when your job does.

Do I need a medical exam?

Not always. Depending on your age, health and the amount of coverage, some carriers can approve you through accelerated underwriting — prescription history and MIB records — with no exam at all. Others ask for a short paramedical exam scheduled around your shifts. Nursing is treated as a standard occupation by most carriers.

I already have a 403(b). Why would I want this too?

Keep the 403(b) and take every dollar of the match. An IUL sits alongside it for what a retirement account doesn't do: a death benefit, living benefit riders, and cash value you may be able to reach through policy loans before 59½ without the IRS early-withdrawal penalty. Loans reduce the policy's values and benefits, and your agent will show you the guaranteed column alongside the projection.

What if I change hospitals, go travel, or go back to school?

Your IUL is personally owned and isn't tied to any employer. If your income drops for a while, IULs offer premium flexibility subject to policy requirements — call your agent before reducing payments so the policy is reviewed first and doesn't lapse.

Are you affiliated with my hospital or a nursing association?

No. Prime Financial is an independent insurance agency. We aren't affiliated with any hospital, health system, staffing agency or nursing association, and nothing about your policy goes through your employer.
