United States flagThank you for what you do

America runs on truckers

Almost everything on a store shelf got there on the back of a truck — and on the back of the person driving it. You keep this country moving. Making sure your family's covered is the least you've earned.

The problem

Nobody's building a retirement for owner-operators

There's no 401(k) match on a 1099. No group life that follows you. No HR department reminding you to sign up. If you want a plan, you've got to build it yourself.

  • Company coverage isn't yours

Group life through a carrier ends the day you leave. Switch companies twice in five years and you've had three policies — and kept none of them.

  • Your pay is lumpy, not low

Plenty of owner-operators gross good money and keep too little of it, because it comes in uneven settlements instead of a steady paycheck. A fixed monthly bill is the wrong fit for that.

  • The job is hard on your body

An injury that keeps you out of the seat stops your income cold. Living benefit riders can pay out part of the death benefit while you're alive if a qualifying illness hits.

Why drivers own their coverage

Keep the company plan. Keep the 401(k). This works right alongside them.

  • 01

    Yours, not your carrier's

Group life ends the day you leave a carrier. A policy you own doesn't care whose freight you're hauling or whose authority you're running under.

  • 02

    Pay in when freight's good

Put more in after a strong settlement and ease off when rates drop, within your policy's limits. It's built for paychecks that never come in even.

  • 03

    Protection when the market drops

Your cash value has a 0% floor, so a bad year in the market credits zero instead of a loss. Policy fees still apply — and we'll show you the down years, not just the good ones.

  • 04

    Living benefits

A heart attack, a stroke or a diagnosis that takes you off the road. If you're diagnosed with a qualifying critical, chronic or terminal illness, you can get part of your death benefit early — while you're still alive.

“I'm 1099. No 401(k), no match, nothing. They built an IUL around my settlement weeks so I fund it hard in the fall and back off in February. Four years in and I'm finally building something instead of just grinding.”

Switching carriers

Your coverage rides with you

Going from a company seat to your own authority? Leasing on somewhere new? Parking the truck for good? Your policy goes wherever you go. Nothing changes when your W-2 turns into a 1099 — and depending on your age and health, many drivers qualify with no medical exam.

Straight answers

Trucker IUL, answered plainly

What is an IUL for truckers?

An IUL is permanent life insurance that provides a death benefit for your family while also giving you the opportunity to build cash value over time.

Do I need a medical exam? Will my DOT medical or driving record matter?

Not always. Depending on your age, health and the amount of coverage, some carriers can approve you through accelerated underwriting — prescription history, MIB records and your motor vehicle report — with no exam at all. Others ask for a short paramedical exam that can be scheduled around your time at home. Commercial driving is a standard occupation for most carriers; your health history and driving record matter more than the job itself.

How much do truckers typically put into an IUL?

Funding depends on income, age, coverage needs and policy design. Some truckers choose to contribute around $200 to $1,000+ per month toward their policy.

Can an IUL help me fund my retirement?

That is what most drivers use it for. In a properly funded policy, cash value can later be accessed through policy loans and withdrawals, which are generally not taxed as income under current tax law as long as the policy stays in force. It works best alongside a Solo 401(k) or IRA, not instead of one — your agent will show you the guaranteed values next to the projection before you decide.

Can I access the cash value while I'm alive?

Yes. As cash value builds, you may be able to access it through policy loans or withdrawals for emergencies, retirement income, business needs or other expenses. Loans and withdrawals can reduce policy values and benefits.

What if I change trucking companies or become an owner-operator?

Your IUL is personally owned and isn't tied to your trucking company. Changing carriers, becoming an owner-operator or going independent generally doesn't affect ownership of your policy.

What happens if freight slows down and I can't fund as much?

IULs offer premium flexibility, subject to policy requirements. Depending on how your policy is funded and its available cash value, you may be able to adjust your payments. Your agent can review your policy before making changes to help prevent it from lapsing.
